hi Greg, great to hear from you. Larry Butler is one of my favorite people, please tell him I said hi. A good place to start for the slight overdriven sound would be a tele or strat on the bridge pickup with some highs rolled off on the guitar, through slight compression(dyna-comp or boss) through a tube screamer or centaur distortion pedal dialed in with a small or medium amount of distortion-whatever sounds good to your ears. It seems to me those are the most interesting tones--it's easy to sound super clean or super distorted, but that in-between sizzle is harder to be consistent with.
